Mobile and Emerging Platforms Are Focus of World Newspaper Congress

Paid content and all access strategies have proven that readers will pay for digital access, but what do they get for their money? Publishers are going to need more sophisticated strategies to maintain digital growth.

That's the idea behind a featured session on mobile and emerging platforms at the World Newspaper Congress, which will feature strategies and ideas from three continents to help publishers accelerate the development of their digital offerings.

Regional Dominance, International Success: a Strategy for Newspapers in the Digital Era

With headquarters in the Vorarlberg region of Austria, it would be easy to regard Russmedia as a typical regional newspaper company. But with 10 daily newspapers, 80 weekly papers, and more than 100 portals that reach nearly 20 million unique users every month, it is so much more.

The company's two-part strategy – locally oriented in Austria, Hungary and Romania, and more widely international thanks to digital – is something that many newspaper companies can identify with, and will be featured at the World Newspaper Congress, to be held in Torino, Italy, from 9 to 11 June next.

Statement from Kiev on Murder and Attacks on Journalists

The following statement has been issued by the International Partnership Mission, of which WAN-IFRA is a part, concerning the murder and attacks on journalists who are covering the current clashes.

The International Partnership Mission on the safety and protection of journalists and press freedom in Ukraine, currently in Kiev, has strongly condemned the violence that today claimed the life of Vesti correspondent Vyacheslav Veremyi and left at least 27 journalists injured. The mission has called on Ukrainian authorities to allow an immediate, independent, and transparent investigation and to bring those responsible to justice.

Telegraph's Chief Content Officer Joins World Editors Forum

Jason Seiken, the Editor-in-chief and Chief Content Officer of the Telegraph in the United Kingdom, who has been at the forefront of digital growth and newsroom change for two decades, has joined the programme for the World Editors Forum, the annual conference for chief editors and other senior newsroom personnel to be held in Torino, Italy, from 9 to 11 June next.

Mr Seiken is one of the news industry's leading evangelists for the digital future. Before joining the Telegraph in September 2013, he transformed the US public broadcaster PBS into a top-25 video destination, founded PBS Digital Studios and launched more than two dozen iPhone, iPad and Android apps.

World's Press calls for immediate release of Ethiopia's jailed journalists

The World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) and the World Editors Forum have condemned the continued imprisonment of Ethiopian journalists under the country's Anti-Terror Proclamation -- including the 2014 Golden Pen of Freedom laureate Eskender Nega -- and have called for their immediate release.

London to Host Digital Media Awards and Conference

WAN-IFRA, the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers, has announced the call for entries for the annual European Digital Media Awards, which honour individuals and news publishing companies that have created ground breaking digital products that engage readers while increasing their online business.
